Vanished North Baltimore
From the North Baltimore, Ohio Area Historical Society
By Tom Boltz
The North Baltimore Ohio Area Historical Society recently acquired a large, plastic-encased photocopy of an 1888 Map of North Baltimore. Clearly marked on the map are the locations of three glass factories as well as many other historic buildings that no longer exit. This earliest known map of the village also contains a list of many early North Baltimore businesses. An image of the map is shown above.
The original map was given to my father, Emerson Boltz, in the 1950s, when he was publisher and editor of the North Baltimore News. I recently donated it to Bowling Green State University’s Center for Archival Collections so that it can be properly conserved. The Center has provided an actual-size (about 24 by 36 inches) photocopy of the map to the Historical Society. The copy is encased in archival-quality plastic so that it is suitable for display and close inspection.
The Historical Society invites all local residents and visitors to drop by the Historical Center, located at 229 North Main Street, to see the map. The Center has been closed during January and February; however, beginning on March 2, it will be open on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 to 12:00.
