| Subway is still planned for Downtown NB Posting Date: 07/24/2011 JP Miklovic

North Baltimore can still expect a Subway restaurant to be opening in Downtown NB. According to the owner of building at 113 North Main Street, Gary Luken, "the bids for work to make the building ready for a Subway are out. I expect the bids to be back in two or three weeks."

Luken said that the south wall has been deteriorating since the Village and County removed the former Gonzales and Harmon buildings.
According to Luken, with this interior wall being left exposed to the elements, the building at 113 North Main, has suffered considerable damage from water and wind. Luken has been frustrated that the village and/or county, has not stepped up and helped him to finance the repairs, after they removed the buildings. He says that at the time of the demolition, he was told that this wall would be sealed off, as part of the demolition process. Now, he says, since he doesn't, "have it in writing, I am not getting any help, with a problem I did not create!"
Luken said that there is also considerable damage to the 2nd story of the structure and that he has had to invest considerable time and money into restoring this as well.
As far as the Subway, Luken says that Subway has very high standards for the buildings that they move into and that the cost of these renovations are at the building owners expense. He added that Subway, once the building is ready for occupancy, will then invest a considerable amount of money into the property, to make it into what people are used to seeing at a Subway.
He had hoped to have the Subway franchisee into the building in August, but it appears that this will be delayed, due to the amount of work on the exterior wall and flooring. |

Posted Date: 07/24/2011 Sad Mr. Luken has to pay for a problem out of his own pocket that the county or village created for him. Wonder why the county or village is not stepping up to fix this situation correctly, since one of them created it for Mr. Luken. Hope you get this resolved Mr. Luken without any out of pocket expence that is not your responsibility, so NB can have a vacent storefront filled with a good business. By: JT |
