North Baltimore Ohio Area Historical Society Inc

Bits & Pieces” Newsletter

New Name

Our long term planning since last spring has finally started to develop into great news. We have now become incorporated and therefore had to adapt to a new name. We are no longer the North Baltimore Area Historical Society; we are now the “North Baltimore Ohio Area Historical Society Incorporated”.

New Website

This past year, Christine Boltz, daughter of Tom and Jean Boltz, has created a new website for the Society. Her and her dad put a lot of long hours in compiling this for us and be sure to thank them for all their time,

labor and skills. The new site is showing various tabs for different information regarding the Society and the Historical Center. Volunteers are hoping to keep an update of items of the past, present and future for the public on a regular basis. We more than welcome anyone who wants to write an article, volunteer here at the center or e-mail us requests or comments. Be sure to check us out online and add us to your favorites.

New Status

Another long term goal of becoming a nonprofit organization has been in the works also this past year. Rick VanMooy spent a lot of time getting our By Laws updated. Gwenn Mauk has been digging deep into past files to compile all types of information for our society. Forms to be filled out and copies and copies had to be made. Phyllis Mercer, our past secretary and current president, has also done a lot of file digging and signing many forms. Tom and Jean Boltz have been helping them with this complicated paperwork, not to mention an accountant that specializes in this procedure we had to hire. We are currently in the pending stage awaiting approval, which hopefully will be soon.

New Annual Membership Drive for 2010

In case you have been wondering why our 2010 membership drive is being held in March instead of January, it’s because we wanted to make sure we were able to inform all our members and the public of some of the things that’s been happening here at the center. Our goal this year is to add two life memberships and ten new individuals. Please help us meet our goal by mailing your membership applications during the months of March and April. Memberships and donations are tax deductible. Thank you in advance for your dedication and generosity.

New Budget for 2010

Like everyone else, we have been trying to stay within our proposed budget. With these tough economic times it is also very hard for a small volunteer organization. We began this year’s budget based on $1,400, as our ending balance at the December 2009 board meeting was $1,413.01. Our ongoing annual bills consist of the following:

Phone bill (ave $45 per month) $ 550.00 OH Historical Society membership 35.00

Internet 110.00 NB High School yearbook ad 90.00

Website 100.00 NB High School yearbook purchase 50.00

Post Office Box rental 50.00 Lawn care donation 50.00

These expenses do not include computers/printers; paper, ink cartridges and other office supplies. Research and preservation supplies are very expensive. Photo paper and ink to copy and preserve pictures, along with frames to display them. Special gloves and special ink pens to avoid further damage of irreplaceable items must also be purchased for use with certain items. Postage keeps going up and so does our mailing list. Our general list of everyday cleaning supplies and non-allocated general expenses continues to grow as we do. The source of us being successful in a growing community depends on donations. This consists of membership dues; individual and organization donations and good attendance at our small fundraisers. We are not an organization that knocks on doors for money, but please consider us with your membership dues. Thanks in advance!

New Survey

During the last six months of 2009, a new survey was taken as to how many people were visiting the Historical Center on Tuesday mornings. We averaged eleven visitors each week. Not only were we quite pleased, but we agreed to retain being open the same hours; every Tuesday from 9-12 noon, every week from March thru December. Closings may occur during bad weather or holiday conflicts. The survey confirmed our need to continue to plan ahead for the future in preserving our heritage and artifacts; providing educational information to the children of our community and services to the public. This survey did not include people attending the various meetings held at the center; luncheons; teas; July’s Summer Fest; Powell School third grade tours and our Christmas open house. Phone calls and e-mail questions have also been increasing as area residents are becoming more aware of the information ad services we can provide them.
