NB American Legion Grant Will Fund New Displays
The North Baltimore Ohio Area Historical Society thanks the North Baltimore American Legion Post 539 for their very generous $1000 grant to our organization. The Historical Society is using this donation to fund several new displays at the History Center.
One will be the erection of the old North Baltimore Post Office panels in the History Center garage. These panels date from the early 1900s and were used in several post office locations along North Main Street. When the current Post Office building at 115 East Broadway was erected in the mid1950s the panels were no longer needed. Bonnie Knaggs, former NBOAHS president obtained the panels for the Society in the 1990s.
Volunteers Jim Kuhlman and Sam Bretz will be working on renovating and assembling the old Post Office panels. Both are members of the American Legion.
This photograph appeared in an early 1900s issue of the North Baltimore Beacon. The Beacon Building, located at 101 North Main Street, burned in 1985 and the site is now a parking lot.
In this photo enlargement, the Post Office clerk’s window is on the right while individual post office boxes are on the left of the window. |
