A meeting has been scheduled for parents of children in the North Baltimore School District who will be five on or before August 1st of this year and plan to attend kindergarten in the fall. Parents need to call the Powell School for an appointment time. The screening dates will be April 10th and 11st from 5:00 – 6:00 or 6:15-7:15 in the evening.

Parents who may be considering early entrance for their child (birthdate from August 2 - December 31) need to call Mrs. North to identify that they are interested in discussing early entrance. Parents interested in pursuing early entrance must meet with Mrs. North and the district’s school psychologist to review the criteria for early entrance before the scheduled kindergarten screening dates.

All kindergarten age children currently in our Powell preschool, whether on an IEP or not, need to go through the screening process.

The screening process will take about 45-60 minutes and you must be signed up for a specific time. Parents will be given information regarding the kindergarten screening process and the kindergarten program. The screening will take place with the children while parents complete paperwork for entrance into kindergarten and participate in a literacy presentation. Birth certificates are REQUIRED for your child to be screened during the April 10^th and 11th screening dates. Therefore, if you do not have one available, you must get a copy before those dates. The hospital record with the footprint WILL NOT serve as the birth certificate. If you do not have a birth certificate, please call the office with your child’s name so that we can plan a later screening date when the birth certificate has been obtained. Parents also need to bring updated immunization records, custody papers, proof of residency (example is a utility bill with your name and address on it) and social security card to this appointment. All children planning to attend school in the fall must be screened.

This meeting is for parents and kindergarten children only; please do not bring other siblings to the screening. A parent/guardian must accompany the child to the screening. Children will have the opportunity to see a kindergarten room during the screening process.
