HWE to hold Annual Business/Appreciation Meeting
Posting Date: 09/19/2014

Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative (HWEC) will host its 76th Annual Business and Member Appreciation Meeting on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Stroh Center on the Bowling Green State University campus. Doors open at 4 p.m.

The event is free to the co-op’s more than 10,000 members and their immediate families, but tickets are required. Members are urged to reserve their tickets by calling 800-445-4840 to avoid lines or to bring identification with them the day of the event. So far, approximately 1,000 co-op members, guests, employees and dignitaries, including Ohio State Representative Tim Brown, have made reservations to attend.

President and CEO George Walton said, “The business portion of the meeting will begin promptly at 5 p.m., but members are encouraged to come early to see our great activities and to vote on proposed bylaw-revisions. The meeting will include reports on the state of the cooperative; the results of the recent election of trustees; a decision on bylaw revisions; a financial report, and other relevant business matters.”

Three trustee seats were up for election this year. Incumbent Board Vice Chairman Dan Wickard of Bowling Green in District 2 (southern Wood County), was challenged by William P. Kale of Portage. Incumbent and Findlay resident James Demler of District 7 (central Hancock County), was opposed by Sue Tucker, also of Findlay. Incumbent and Assistant Secretary Tom Kagy of Bluffton ran unopposed in District 8 (southwest Hancock, southeast Putnam, northeast Allen and northwest Hardin counties).

Members received their ballots for the election in the mail last month. During the meeting, election results will be

announced and oaths of office will be administered. Hancock-Wood 2013/14 Board of Trustee members are: Chairman Ed Crawford, officers Dan Wickard, Tom Dierksheide and Tom Kagy and members Steve Gerten, Marlene Barker, David Corbin, James Demler, John Edie and Knut Lahrs.

A daughter of Hancock-Wood members Rachel Wenzinger was named delegate of the Ohio Youth Leadership Council and will deliver her speech at the meeting. She was chosen as best presenter of Ohio Youth Tour contestants at this year’s Youth Leadership Conference held in July, in Washington, D.C. She is the daughter of Russ and Renee Wenzinger of Deshler.

The meeting includes a concert by chart topper Jason Michael Carroll, who will perform hits including “Livin’ Our Love Song,” “Alyssa Lies,” and “I Can Sleep When I’m Dead,” along with other songs in his repertoire. Local vocalist Gabrielle Calvert, 14, was selected to provide a rendition of the national anthem.

According to Walton, Hancock-Wood has hosted the annual meeting for 76 years to inform and show appreciation for its members. The popular event has become a kind of reunion - offering prizes, entertainment and family-friendly activities.

Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative, established in April 1938, serves more than 10,000 members with more than 13,000 accounts in portions of Hancock, Wood, Allen, Erie, Hardin, Henry, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca and Wyandot counties. Throughout the cooperative’s history, HWEC has delivered reliable, affordable services and supported local causes through charitable contributions, volunteerism and other activities to make a positive impact within the communities it serves.
